Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of teacher education programs offered by the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology, relating this phenomenon to the social and historical background of education and, in particular, to the federal institutions of professional education. For this analysis, a survey of teacher education courses offered by the Federal Institutes was conducted. Based on these data, the profile of teacher education provision within these institutions is outlined, followed by a discussion of what this profile represents.

The survey was carried out using the e-MEC system, the official electronic platform of the Ministry of Education. The data were analyzed through a dialectical approach grounded in historical materialism, with the aim of deepening the understanding of what the findings reveal when considered in their totality and historicity.

The research shows that the courses offered are predominantly focused on initial teacher education and are mainly offered during the evening. The Northeast region has the highest concentration of programs. Furthermore, it was found that the primary focus of the provision is the preparation of teachers for basic education, especially in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. In contrast, teacher education programs aimed at professional education are still limited and relatively underrepresented. Considering that the Federal Institutes embody characteristics that distinguish them from other institutions dedicated to teacher education, they emerge as a new and expanding locus for teacher education. Furthermore, this is a locus that continues to grow and consolidate its role within the Brazilian educational landscape.
