Abstract

This text discusses the imperative to reconsider the instruction of Brazilian dances within the context of coloniality, aiming to counteract the colonizing methodologies that have led to the exclusion of Afro-Brazilian and Amerindian legacies from school curricula. Brazilian dances have taken a backseat to foreign dances in Dance undergraduate programs, resulting in dance educators being trained with a colonial perspective. The pervasive infl uence of colonization on Brazilian artistic productions is acknowledged, underscoring the importance of critically examining existing methodological frameworks. In response to this reality, the research proposes the exploration of Afrofuturism as a wellspring of inspiration to devise alternative approaches for teaching traditional Brazilian dances, which can challenge hegemonic colonizing practices. Th e study unfolds in multiple stages encompassing the theoretical exploration of concepts related to Decolonial Studies, Dance, Science Fiction, and Afrofuturism, artistic experimentation, and the formulation of a pedagogical method. Th is article presents the fi ndings derived from bibliographic research and artistic experimentation, furnishing valuable material for the forthcoming phase of the study, which entails craft ing Afrofuturistic-themed lesson plans for Brazilian dances that are adaptable across various educational levels.
