Abstract

This paper reports three teaching experiences that took place at different times during the 1980s in Literature and Technical Writing courses. These experiences were designed to provide opportunities for the study of historical context, the creation and observation of characters, the development of self-knowledge, the theoretical and practical study of narrative, the demystification of the act of writing, and a deeper understanding of students. In general, the activities were guided by life histories, examined from three perspectives: those of the writers, the characters, and the students themselves. From a retrospective perspective, this report proposes reflections based on the assumption that life history strongly shapes the fundamental structure of identity and influences the direction of individual choices.
